Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that occurs when a person's breathing is interrupted during sleep. When left untreated, people with sleep apnea stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep, sometimes hundreds of times. This means the brain -- and the rest of the body -- may not get enough oxygen.

Repeated cycles of decreased oxygenation lead to very serious cardiovascular problems. Additionally, these individuals suffer from excessive daytime sleepiness, depression, and loss of concentration.

There are two types of sleep apnea:
  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA): The more common of the two forms of apnea, it is caused by a blockage of the airway, usually when the soft tissue in the back of the throat collapses during sleep.
  • Central sleep apnea: Unlike OSA, the airway is not blocked but the brain fails to signal the muscles to breathe due to instability in the respiratory control center.

Other Signs and Symptoms

Others signs and symptoms of sleep apnea may include:

  • Morning headaches
  • Memory or learning problems and not being able to concentrate
  • Feeling irritable, depressed, or having mood swings or personality changes
  • Urination at night
  • A dry throat when you wake up

The first step in treatment resides is recognition of the symptoms and seeking appropriate consultation. Untreated sleep apnea can be dangerous and detrimental to your health, so it’s important to see a doctor or sleep apnea dentist if you suspect that you or a loved one might have it.
